We spent the last few months going between using our air conditioning units and our heaters. But those days of intense, unending heat and humidity are just around the corner. With those days almost here, no one wants their air conditioner under-performing! If your air conditioner isn’t working up to par, here are some things to check BEFORE you call your local HVAC company. By checking our tips below, you could save yourself $100s.
#1 – Check your air filter
If you have your air conditioner set to your usual temperature yet it just isn’t cold enough, check your air filter. To some this may sound obvious, but you would be surprised how many people skip this step! Simply put, a clogged air filter reduces air flow, which limits your air conditioner’s efficiency.
#2 – Check your breakers
Sometimes your air conditioner may work fine one day, but after we have one of our Louisiana summer storms, your system seems shot. Before you assume that something major happened, check your breakers! A storm system may cause your breakers to trip, leading to your air conditioner not working. A simple check and flip of a switch may save you an unnecessary technician call.
#3 – Make sure natural gas is reaching your unit
If your system runs on gas, make sure you haven’t accidently turned the power to “off.” As we discuss in our most recent video, the on/off switch for the gas system looks just like a light switch. You can easily think you are turning off the lights when you are really turning off the gas to your entire system.
#4 – Check your fuses
Not everyone is comfortable with this step, but if you are, check to see if there is a blown fuse. If you can’t tell by looking at it, you can take it to a hardware store where they will check it for you or you can go to an auto parts store and buy your own fuse tester. Regardless of which approach you are most comfortable with, this one step could save you serious money!
#5 – Check your thermostat battery
We all know that your air conditioner unit powers your entire system. However, if the batteries in your actual thermostat are weak or dead, your unit won’t be able to reach the desired temperature. The result? A seriously hot house! But checking the batteries before you call a technician could save you an unnecessary service call.
Our goal is to help you save money and get your air conditioner working well as quickly as possible. However, if these tips don’t help and you still need assistance, call Three Rivers Services today at (985) 892-7071. We’re here to help!!
