Who wouldn’t want their air conditioning system to last as long as possible? These units perform an important role in keeping our homes comfortable, and in Louisiana, they’re downright essential.
But did you know that your home maintenance habits can make a real difference in how long your A/C system lasts?
Keep your air conditioner cooling like new with these five simple tips:
1. Keep It Small
Think a bigger air conditioner means a cooler home? Think again.
Oversized air conditioners are inefficient. In fact, it’s more advisable to run a smaller unit for a longer amount of time. Doing so uses less electricity and helps you to avoid short cycles during the hottest part of the day.
An oversized unit only spells trouble and can fail when you need it most. Whenever possible, go for the smaller unit, and enjoy a smaller electricity bill as well!
2. Remember the Rule of Two Degrees
It can be tempting to crank the A/C down during the summer when you’re out of your home.
What’s the harm in changing the thermostat by a few degrees? The answer may be a lot!
Always follow the rule of two degrees. Avoid going up or down more than 2 degrees when you’re out of your home. Otherwise, you’ll waste more energy cooling your home when the hottest part of the day hits.
However, if you’ll be out of your home for a few days, you can go up about 4 degrees. Anything higher, and you’re at risk for short cycling and a sky-high bill at the end of the month.
3. Keep It Clean
When’s the last time you washed your air conditioner coils or even took a look at them? It’s time to take the hose to the coils and do a little cleaning.
Avoid using a high-pressure hose or directing too much water at the coils. A gentle hand is best for removing dirt and grime that has built up over time. Make this a monthly routine in the warmer months.
While you’re at it, be sure to change that air conditioner filter. A clean filter means better airflow and higher efficiency.
4. Take Care of Your Home
Some of the best ways to keep your air conditioner happy actually take place inside your home.
Start by opening the doors to your rooms and hallways. This simple habit will increase airflow and reduce imbalances in pressure. Closed doors mean your unit has to work even harder to cool down your home.
Next, check your home’s insulation. If it’s been awhile since you’ve done so, you’ll want to meet with insulation specialist.
Check the performance of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors while you’re at it and have new ones installed if necessary. These alarms of an essential part of HVAC and general home safety.
5. Don’t Forget Your Annual Checkup
This is a big one! Annual service by the professionals is a must!
Skimping in this area can lead to costly repairs and long, hot summer days. You’ll save more on energy, and keep your air conditioner working like new for years to come!
